VTCT Skills (ITEC) Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage

This Level 3 ITEC Diploma in Sports Massage sets out to equip learners with comprehensive practical and theoretical expertise to effectively provide sports massage treatments to a range of clients who have dysfunctional tissue, without acute/post-acute injuries or underlying pathological conditions.


Objectives: to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to be able to - assess clients and construct a sports massage treatment plan - understand the principles of soft tissue dysfunction - understand how to determine the appropriate Sports massage techniques


The learner will also develop knowledge about current legislation and working practice requirements and client care and communication which is essential to work and be successful in the industry.

Level 3 Includes:

Professional Practice in Sports Massage (20 hours)

This module provides a concise overview of the legal, ethical, and professional standards required for sports massage therapists. You will learn about legal obligations, the importance of informed consent and professional boundaries, and the consequences of non-compliance. The curriculum also covers essential topics such as professional communication, record keeping, insurance requirements, and emergency protocols, ensuring you can practice safely and ethically.

Anatomy and Physiology for Sports Massage (70 hours)

This extensive module provides the foundational knowledge of the human body essential for sports massage. You will explore the structure and function of all major body systems—including the skeletal, muscular, nervous, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems. This includes locating key muscles and understanding how sports massage affects the body on a physical, physiological, and psychological level.

Principles of Health and Fitness (20 hours)

This module focuses on the principles of a healthy lifestyle and the impact of exercise on the body. You will learn about the benefits of physical activity, the physiological effects of exercise, and the components of fitness. The curriculum also covers key nutritional information, training principles, and the signs of overtraining, providing a holistic view of client health.

Sports Massage Treatments (90 hours)

This practical module covers the entire treatment process, from preparing the environment to evaluating your work. You will learn about the history of massage, how to conduct subjective and objective assessments, and apply a wide range of sports massage techniques. The course emphasizes the importance of proper posture, client communication, and professional standards throughout the treatment and provides a framework for client aftercare and self-reflection.

Understand the Principles of Soft Tissue Dysfunction

This module provides a detailed understanding of soft tissue injuries and dysfunction. You will learn to differentiate between different types and severities of injuries, identify their common causes and symptoms, and understand the natural repair process. The curriculum also highlights factors that can influence soft tissue repair and explains the critical role of the inflammatory process in healing.
